What does Hemmed need permission for?
Hemmed needs Accessibility access to move other apps' menu bar icons and, for Pinned, to read another app's menu bar menu while you pick an item and to choose that item when you run the pin. macOS asks for it the first time you open the app, and Hemmed doesn't use that access for anything else.
How do I bring hidden icons back?
Click the Hemmed icon to bring them back, and click again to tuck them away. You can also use a keyboard shortcut.
What happens to icons behind the notch?
On a Mac with a notch, macOS can hide icons behind the camera housing or fold them into its overflow chevron. While your icons are showing, Hemmed gathers those in a tray under the notch. Hover one to see its app, and click it to open its menu right there. Click the tray's chevron or swipe up with two fingers to tuck it into the notch; swipe down or move the pointer into the notch to bring it back.
What happens when I install a new menu bar app?
Its icon starts out tucked away, and a coral dot appears on the Hemmed icon, even while your bar is collapsed. Click the Hemmed icon to see the new arrival, then choose Make Visible or Keep Hidden. The dot stays until you choose. You can turn this off in Settings.
What are hungry icons?
While your Mac runs on battery, Hemmed watches the apps behind your hidden icons. When one keeps using a lot of energy, a leaf and a count appear beside the Hemmed icon, and its icon gets a leaf in the notch tray. Click the Hemmed icon to see which apps, then quit them one by one or all at once with Quit the Hungry Ones, or ignore an app on battery. Showing an icon again clears its leaf right away. In Settings you can switch the count to a dot, a dot with a notice, or a tinted icon.
What are pinned actions?
Pinned lets you run an item from another app's menu bar menu in one click, from Hemmed's menu. Right-click the Hemmed icon, choose Pin a Menu Item, pick a menu bar item and pin the item you want. Or choose Record a Pin, click any menu bar or notch tray icon, and pick the menu item to pin it. Submenus work too, and you can rename, reorder and remove pins. The first time you run a pin, Hemmed asks you to confirm, and warns you if the item looks like it may quit, sign out, delete or stop something. If a pin can't run, Hemmed shows a notice saying why and marks the pin until it runs again.
What can't be pinned?
Pinned works with apps that use standard Mac menus; apps whose menu bar icon opens a custom popup window aren't supported. Switches, checkboxes, sliders and checked menu items can't be pinned, so a pin can't quietly flip a setting. Clock and Notification Center are excluded because they show private notifications, and Control Center modules and Spotlight open panels rather than menus. Pinned never reads what's inside a window.
Can I use the same layout on my other Macs?
Yes. Hemmed 1.5.2 and later syncs your layout with iCloud automatically: which icons are hidden or shown, icon order, your Pinned Actions, and your new arrival, hungry icon and keyboard shortcut settings. Sign in to the same iCloud account on each Mac and keep Same bar on every Mac (iCloud Sync) on in Settings. It's on by default. Changes can take a few moments to reach your other Macs.
What happens to system icons on macOS 27?
On macOS 27, hiding icons also hides Focus, Now Playing and Screen Mirroring. They come back when you show your icons, in the bar or in the notch tray.
